FAQs
An Orthodontist is a dental specialist, trained to diagnose and treat an improper bite and malpositioned teeth, with the goal of improving function, health and the overall appearance of the smile.

In addition to earning the same degree as a general dentist, an extra 2-3 years of education are required to earn the specialty designation of an Orthodontist.  An Orthodontist is an expert in both the management of tooth movement and facial esthetics.

Dr. Andrew Chen is an accredited Orthodontist.  This means that Dr. Chen is a dental specialist who has completed an advanced post-doctoral course, accredited by the American Dental Association, in the specialty of orthodontics.

Q2.  What health benefits can I receive from orthodontic treatment?

A number of health benefits stem from orthodontic treatment.  By aligning one's crooked or crowded teeth, orthodontic treatment can make the teeth easier to clean and maintain.  Continuous maintenance reduces the buildup of plaque bacteria, which is a component of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.

Orthodontic treatment can also significantly improve a "bad bite".  The correction of the bite can help enhance chewing function, reduce speech impairments and even decrease the risk of a traumatic dental injury.

Q3.  By what age should my child seek orthodontics?

People can benefit from orthodontic treatment at any age; however, there are many advantages to seeking early diagnosis and treatment, as treatment options can become more limited once all the permanent teeth have come in and facial growth has slowed.

Dr. Andrew Chen and the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child should have their first orthodontic check-up by the age of seven.  This can be earlier if a problem is detected by the family dentist or the child's physician.

Q4.  Can adults benefit from orthodontic treatment, and if so, what options are available to me?

Absolutely! The basic biological process involved in moving teeth is the same in adults as it is in children, so orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age.

A dental examination is required to evaluate the health of the teeth, the gums, and the supporting bones in order to determine the prospects for improvement by orthodontics.

While many people used to believe that orthodontics was “just for kids”, the fact is that it is more and more adults are seeking orthodontics to enhance and improve their smiles.
